Readers will learn how to identify backup hardware that best matches their needs and budget, and find instructions for using Time Machine as well as alternatives for nine situations where Time Machine lacks crucial features. Kissell explains how to create a complete backup system for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard or 10.5 Leopard that includes versioned backups, an all-important bootable duplicate, and an offsite backup. (Free with Backblaze subscription, 9.8 MB, 10.Ithaca, NY-Everyone knows that backups are essential to protect against file corruption, hardware failure, and theft, but to go beyond the limited security of turning on Time Machine or copying a few files to a disc, Mac users can now turn to Take Control of Easy Mac Backups (TidBITS, $10.00 USD) by award-winning author and backup guru Joe Kissell. Version 4.0 of Backblaze now requires Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard or later, though previous versions of Backblaze will continue to run on 10.5 Leopard and will be supported for the foreseeable future. The auto-update process for current Backblaze subscribers will begin in the next couple of weeks, but you can get the update now by downloading directly from the Backblaze Web site or performing a Check for Update within the Backblaze software. Alas, the new version still can’t put restored files in their original locations automatically. Backblaze also now allows very large files to be backed up over the course of several months (should you have a slow upload Internet connection) previously, backing up a very large file would have been abandoned after a few days. In addition to improving upload speeds, the Backblaze Downloader app has been given threading capabilities to quicken the pace of downloading recovered files. (Backblaze admits that they’re “actually creating and using multiple processes” as opposed to true threading see this blog post for more background on Backblaze threading and how to implement it.) Differing from the more typical use of the term threading (where multiple threads of data are contained within a single process), Backblaze uses multiple processes to independently send encrypted blocks of data to the Backblaze data center. Backblaze 4.0 (which is tied to the subscription-based Backblaze online data backup service) introduces a new threading approach that optimizes bandwidth utilization when network latency is present. #1671: Apple Q3 2023 earnings, new Beats headphones and earbuds, Stage Manager adoption rate, do you use Spotlight?īackblaze has updated its eponymous backup software to version 4.0 with significant improvements in upload and download speeds.1672: The hidden power of Google Sheets, Launchpad usage levels, Emergency SOS via satellite in the Maui fires, do you use proxy icons?.1673: macOS 13.5.1, watchOS 9.6.1, copy data from Web tables, what Spotlight is used for, do you use Apple’s Weather app?.1674: Proxy icons boost productivity, Arc 1.5 tab syncing, Backblaze price increase, which iPhone weather apps do you use?. ![]() ![]() ![]() 1675: Apple “Wonderlust” event, OS security updates, Apple CSAM pullback, Mozilla car privacy report, iPhone weather apps, bike tour iPhone photos, do you use the iPhone 14 Pro Always-On display?. ![]()
